FAQs
Here is a list of some of the questions I’ve been asked so far. You can also submit a question by posting a comment on the page. I will try my best to reply to it ASAP.
1. What is a podcast?
I could just copy and paste a definition from Wikipedia but I prefer to give my own version. Podcast is basically the recording of audio or video content that is posted on the Web. Nothing special or new about that, right? The difference is that now you can track those postings without taking any action. For example, as soon as you subscribe to my podcast through itunes you don’t need to do anything else! Anytime I post a new episode on the Web, itunes will go and grab it for you! So just connect your ipod and You’re good to go!
2. Why are all episodes about 20m long?
I listen to a lot of podcasts everyday and usually 20 minutes is the time I have when commuting to school or doing some exercises. So I put a lot of hours every week cutting the audio files from as much as 2 hours down to a maximum of 30 minutes. I cut everything from mistakes the speaker makes to noise in the room to content that is not useful. I hope you trust my judgment on deciding the best 20 minutes that I give you.
3. Numbers from The MBA Podcast
Many people ask me how many subscribers I have and if I know who they are. No, I don’t know specifically who are my listeners but as of April 2007 I have had:
- EPISODES - a total of 20,271 downloads
- WEBSITE - 1,427 visitors from 86 countries during the last month
And here is a button that will keep a daily track of the number of subscribers:
4. What is the process?
-
Recording - I basically use an MP3 recorder to record my guest speakers or interviews.
-
Editing - Then I do a lot of editing to remove noises and superficial stuff in order to reduce the length to about 20m.
-
Posting - Finally I post the file on-line for my listeners to get it.
5. Do I need an ipod and itunes?
This is a common mistake. You don’t need anything from Apple to be able to listen to podcasts. On my main page I talk about itunes just because I think that they have done a good job with their interface but personally I don’t use. I use another RSS reader to get my podcasts.
And no, you don’t need an ipod. I don’t have one! I use an MP3 player to listen to my podcasts.
Finally, you don’t need an MP3 player or an RSS reader to get my episodes. You can just click on the files on the main page and just listen to them using Windows Media Player or other software.
Are there any texts of the talks?
Probably, someone will need that.
Hello Sato, right now I don’t have transcripts for the episodes but thanks for the suggestion.
I’ll search to see if there is a software that does that automatically.
For episode #23 I do have a transcript but it was written by the students that made the interview.
